Electrical Disconnects

Electrical DisconnectDunman Electric offers installation of electrical disconnects for home and business owners in the Austin, Round Rock, Georgetown, and San Marcos areas. Electrical disconnects are usually mounted underneath the electric meter along the side of your house or on the electric company’s power pole. Their function is to disconnect power to the house from the outside of the house.

An excellent example would be in case of a fire inside the home. Neither you or the fire department really wants to enter into a burning building to turn off the power. The electrical disconnect could be shut off outside the house where the fire isn’t and then the fire department can put out the blaze without the fear of electrocution.

Electric Wiring

The electric wiring to supply the disconnect is provided from the load side of the electric meter. There are 2 hot wires which both transport 120 volts and are various phases. These phases are usually known as “A” and “B” phases. The entire voltage when calculated between them is about 240 volts. These wires hook up to the disconnect breaker set up inside the disconnect box. In this case, the breaker is a 100-amp Square D two-pole breaker.

Dunman Electric provides electrical disconnect installation services in Austin, Pflugerville, Round Rock, Dripping Springs, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Lakeway, San Marcos, Leander, and surrounding areas in central Texas. Contact us today to set up an appointment. 512-523-5007

Electrical Disconnect Installation

During the electrical disconnect installation, the wires hook up to the top two lugs of the breaker known as the “line” side of the breaker. The neutral wire attaches to the silver-colored lug to the side of the breaker. Tag this wire with white-colored phasing tape to indicate that it is the neutral wire.

The base of the breaker is for the “load” side wiring. The wires which join here feed the electric panel in your house. Hook up the two “hot” wires to the bottom of the breaker. The neutral wire links to the silver-colored lug along the side of the breaker. Tag this wire with white-colored phasing tape to indicate that it is the neutral wire.

The electrical disconnect feeds the breaker panel in your house. The feeder wires hook up to the main breaker in the panel and the neutral wire attaches to the neutral buss.
