    She’s Home! Our Deuce and a Half Is Back!

    If you’ve ever driven by our shop off Brodie and Slaughter, we’re pretty certain you’re familiar with our deuce. Well, early Sunday morning, someone drove our deuce and a half right off the shop lot in broad daylight. We had no idea it was gone until Bastrop PD called later that afternoon to let us know they’d already recovered it.

    If you’ve never met our truck, a “deuce and a half” is Army slang for the M35, the iconic 2.5-ton cargo truck the military used for decades. Ours is hard to miss. It sits out front wearing our logo and rolls along to just about every parade, festival, and community event we can find an excuse to join. It doesn’t make service calls (can you imagine?), but it definitely handles the fun stuff. Around here, it’s become a member of the crew more than just another piece of equipment.

    This is where she was found…stuck in a creekbed in Bastrop. Not our favorite place she’s visited, but certainly one of the more interesting!

    Thanks to the teamwork between Bastrop PD and Austin PD, the deuce was recovered and the person responsible is being prosecuted. We’re incredibly grateful to both departments for everything they did to bring her home. Thank you.

    Aside from a damaged passenger-side mirror, everything appears to be in great shape. She should be back in her usual spot at the shop by the end of the week. Stop by, snap a photo, and say hello.

    Just… leave her on the lot this time.

    Everything that happened this week was a good reminder of how much we appreciate the people who serve our communities every day. We’re proud to offer Police, Fire, EMS, and Military personnel a 20% discount (up to $50) on any service call. It’s our small way to say thank you.

    Build a Low Voltage Electromagnet at Home

    Did you know that electricity flowing through a wire can create an invisible magnetic field? Well, it can! Try this project to create your own, low voltage electromagnet! To get started, open our How To Sand Enameled Wire page for reference and follow the instructions below! Be careful to never touch exposed wire and be sure to disconnect your electromagnet when you’re finished playing with it to avoid overheating the wire and battery. Always ask for help from your adults when handling electricity!

All you need to get started is 18 gauge copper wire, 1 AA battery, 1-2 disc magnets, wire cutters, and some pliers! Remember to ask an adult for help with cutting your wire!
